Essential Legal Steps for Foreign Nationals Relocating to Turkey
Published: June 18, 2025
Turkey continues to attract talent, investors and families from around the world. But navigating its legal system can feel daunting. In this guide, we outline the five critical steps every foreign national must take to secure their residency and stay compliant.
1. Choose the Right Permit Type
Whether you’re coming for work, study, investment or family reunification, Turkey offers several permit categories:
- E-Residence Permit: For salaries, freelance work or property owners.
- Work Permit: Requires a sponsoring employer in Turkey.
- Student Permit: Tied to enrollment at a Turkish university.
- Family Reunification: For spouses and dependents of Turkish residents.
2. Gather & Translate Your Documents
Key documents include your passport copy, biometric photos, proof of health insurance and financial means. As a sworn translator ourselves, we recommend having every document officially translated and apostilled to avoid delays.
3. Submit Your E-Permit Application (E-Ikamet)
Turkey’s online portal is straightforward, but common pitfalls include:
- Invalid expiry dates
- Incomplete address registration in MERNIS
- Health insurance lapses
We guide you through each screen, ensure your appointment slot and hand-hold you at the immigration office if needed.
4. Plan for Renewals & Extensions
Residence permits run 6–12 months. Start your renewal at least 60 days before expiry. We monitor your dates and file all follow-ups so you never overstay.
5. Understand Your Rights & Obligations
Once you hold a permit, you’re entitled to open bank accounts, sign rental contracts, and even purchase property. However, you must also:
- Keep your MERNIS address updated
- Report any criminal charges within 48 hours
- Notify authorities of any permit breaches
